Kendall College Celebrates 30 Years Educating Culinary Students

Anniversary marks three decades leading the nation and globe in providing quality culinary
education

Kendall College Celebrates
30 Years Educating Culinary Students

Anniversary marks three decades
leading the nation and globe in providing quality culinary education

CHICAGO—October 1, 2015—This October, Kendall College celebrates the 30th anniversary of its distinguished culinary arts program. Established in 1985, the School of Culinary Arts at Kendall College is one of the nation’s premier programs for students passionate about careers in the culinary arts. Offering students a Bachelor of Arts in Culinary Arts, an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts, and an Associate of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry, Kendall College is ranked the number one program in Chicago for preparing students for careers in culinary arts by Chicago Michelin Guide restaurants (TNS Global Survey, 2013). Not only is Chicago a top travel destination and cultural center, it is also the home to more than 7,000 restaurants.

“In today’s industry, a college education is essential to a successful career,” said Christopher Koetke, CEC, CCE, HAAC, MBA, vice president of the Kendall College School of Culinary Arts. “Thirty years ago, Kendall was among small number of four-year institutions to recognize that those interested in working in the culinary arts need more than mastery of essential culinary techniques to succeed as entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders in their professions. It is this mindset—a focus on equipping our students with the tools needed to not only succeed in, but to also lead in the culinary industry—that sets Kendall apart and makes the 30th anniversary of our program so special. There are not many culinary arts programs that can claim our tenure and experience educating future leaders in this industry.”

The School of Culinary Arts boasts a network that claims nearly 3,700 graduates and 50 faculty members, including seven winners of the James Beard Award. Kendall graduates have gone on to build and run establishments ranked by the Michelin Guide; most recently Parachute, owned and operated by Kendall alumna Beverly Kim, debuted in the guide for Chicago, joining Acadia, owned and operated by Kendall alumnae Ryan McCaskey, which was elevated to two stars for the first time in 2016.

“For 30 years the School of Culinary Arts has served students from around the world with an innovative curriculum that spans the continuum of quality higher education,” said school dean Dina Altieri, MS, CEC, CCE, CHE. “Our program prepares students with industry-relevant technical and business management skills through hands-on experience inside a kitchen and national and international internships, and it is with this rich history as a foundation that we look toward the next 30 years of leading culinary education.”

Students from nearly 50 countries pursue an education at Kendall College. This focus on international experience and interaction is a core element that continues to lead the vision of the school.

“To make it in today’s culinary landscape, chefs need knowledge of as many global cuisines and techniques as possible,” said Koetke. “The best way to do this is through a curriculum that has a global approach in which students learn these techniques in the classroom and through a diverse environment that allows for students to continue that learning outside the classroom in their daily interactions with peers from around the world.”
