Kendall College Students Earn Seventh Straight Win at the American Culinary Federation’s Regional Knowledge Bowl Competition in Hawaii
Team will compete to retain national title in Phoenix this July
CHICAGO—April 5, 2016—An international team of four students enrolled in the Kendall College School of Culinary Arts took home the winner’s trophy and gold medals at the Central Regional Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl on April 5 at the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) 2016 ChefConnect: Hawaii. This is the seventh consecutive year that a Kendall team has swept this annual regional competition to qualify for finals.
The international Kendall College team, consisting of Nelia Salvia (team captain; Madison, Wis.), Nikhil Bendre (Mumbai, India), Judy Gobey (Chatham, England), and Freja Hagemann (Genesee, Wis.) competed against student teams from professional foodservice-training programs at schools throughout the ACF’s Central Region stretching from Minnesota and Michigan to Texas and Louisiana.
As Central Regional winners, Kendall’s team—which includes students in the school’s associate and baccalaureate culinary arts programs—will compete to hold their national title against winning Western, Southeastern and Northeastern regional teams in July at the ACF’s 2016 National Convention in Phoenix. The team with the highest score will be named the national ACF Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl winner for 2016.
“Kendall students are passionate about careers in the culinary arts, and their dedication to the craft, both in skills development and academic study, is evident in their consistent winning performance in the ACF’s Knowledge Bowl competition,” said dean and team coach Dina Altieri, MS, CEC, CCE, CHE, following the competition. “Competing against teams from across the region is a great way for our students to test their knowledge and connect with others in the industry as they prepare for the future. I am delighted we can bring our seventh consecutive regional win to Chicago.”
The Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl is named after the late chef Baron H. Galand, CEC, AAC, who served as national president of the ACF from 1983 to 1987. First held at the ACF’s 1992 National Convention in Washington, D.C., today the four geographic regions of the ACF hold the competition at their respective conferences in winter and spring to qualify teams to compete for the national title at the ACF’s national convention in summer.

Leigh Uhlir Joins Faculty of Kendall College School of Hospitality Management
Kendall College Alumna Uhlir brings deep industry experience to classroom
CHICAGO—February 21, 2016—The Kendall College School of Hospitality Management is proud to announce that Leigh Uhlir, a hospitality educator with more than 25 years of industry experience, has joined its full-time faculty, effective March 2016. Uhlir, previously a core contributing faculty member at Kendall, has developed courses and training programs based on her professional experience at some of the nation’s leading hospitality companies and restaurants. Kendall’s School of Hospitality Management is ranked the number one program in Chicago for preparing students for careers in hospitality management by Chicago’s leading hotels (TNS Global Survey, 2013).
During her career, Uhlir has led server training at a five-star restaurant and a café and cigar bar at the Four Seasons in Chicago; organized front and back of house trainings at five Las Vegas restaurants for Lettuce Entertain You; developed and delivered trainings for MICROS hospitality point-of-service systems; and managed an Italian restaurant in Wilmette, Ill. She began her academic career in 2008 at Le Cordon Bleu College. During her three years there, she implemented student retention initiatives and faculty development programs, and was promoted to lead instructor.
“Leigh’s strong, versatile background in education, training and front- and back-of-house operations within restaurants and hotels makes her a great addition to our faculty and a leader who will help prepare our students to have a competitive edge in the workplace,” said Susan Tinnish, PhD, dean of the School of Hospitality Management.
Uhlir earned a Master of Education from American InterContinental University and an Associate of Applied Science in culinary arts and a Bachelor of Arts in hospitality and culinary management from Kendall College.

Good Morning Kendall Faculty and Staff!
This last week has been an important one for Kendall, for our students, and for the City of Chicago. Our city was the host for the James Beard Awards and Kendall was an official sponsor of the Awards this year. The 2016 Awards recognized 27 local chefs and restaurants, and three Chicago nominees took home an award:
• Outstanding Restaurant: Alinea, Chicago
• Best Chef: Great Lakes: Curtis Duffy, Grace, Chicago
• Outstanding Restaurant Design Awards: Cherry Circle Room, Chicago
Kendall was well represented at the Awards. From alumni like Chef Jose Garces, who presented an award, to current students like Nikhil Bendre, who joined the red carpet festivities to interview notable chefs and share the content with our online community through social media , the Kendall family made a significant impact on the night.
During the gala, more than 25 Kendall students volunteered to work alongside chefs and front of house staff to execute the Awards gala. I was truly inspired by the stories I heard from our students who were able to meet legendary and recognizable chefs and restauranteurs. I heard many comment of how being there made them inspired to be recognized with a James Beard Award someday!
In partnership with the Illinois Restaurant Association and Choose Chicago, Kendall welcomed an esteemed panel of James Beard Award nominees who discussed insights and advice on success in the culinary industry with students from Kendall and local high schools. Moderated by Rick Bayless and Steve Dolinksy, the panel was followed by a brunch prepared by a number of notable local chefs and Kendall volunteers. Thank you to Christine Franz and the events team for coordinating all of our Kendall volunteers and for organizing a Sunday brunch.
Thank you to The Dining Room for participating in James Beard Eats Week and welcoming 222 dinner guests during this time. Thank you to Chef Chris Koetke for his time and expertise speaking with media about Kendall and the James Beard awards. Here are a few examples:
