Kendall College Associate Professor Sue Tinnish Chaired Committee that Established New APEX/ASTM International Standards for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings and Events
Tinnish获得了西北大学(Northwestern University)传播学理学学士学位(B.S. in Communication Studies)、芝加哥大学(University of Chicago)工商管理硕士学位以及班尼迪克大学(Benedictine University)组织发展博士学位(Ph.D. in Organization Development)。

Kendall College Associate Professor Sue Tinnish Chaired Committee that Established New APEX/ASTM International Standards for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings and Events
CHICAGO-February 16, 2012-The Kendall College School of Hospitality Management is pleased to announce that Assistant Professor Dr. Sue Tinnish chaired the ASTM committee that established the new APEX/ASTM international standards for environmentally sustainable or “green events” for meeting and event planners and their suppliers around the world.
Eight standards are now available for use by meeting planners and suppliers to the meeting industry. This major effort to create standards for planners and suppliers, focused on meetings, was developed and initiated by the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC), a global community dedicated to sustainability in the meetings and events industry and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Work on the standards began in 2007 by the Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX), an initiative that focuses on industry best practices, and ASTM International, a leader in international standards development and delivery systems.
Eight of the nine proposed APEX/ASTM standards are completed. These standards focus on all facets of event planning and management, including: meeting destinations; venues; audio visual equipment; communication supplies; exhibits, food and beverage; onsite offices; and transportation. Tinnish, along with industry professionals, continues to work on the last standard for meeting accommodations.
“This is a major accomplishment representing collaboration between ASTM, the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC), the US Environmental Protection Agency, and hundreds of volunteers across North America and Europe,” said Dr. Tinnish. “Sustainability is a strategic concern for planners, suppliers and the organizations they represent. The level of specificity required and accountability of both the planner and supplier that is built into these standards is unprecedented and fundamental for having more environmentally sustainable meetings.”
A “green” pioneer in the industry, Tinnish has been actively involved in the effort to create sustainability standards for the events industry through the CIC and ASTM International, and was responsible for the coordination and communication between the two organizations as the standards were being developed. She is also the chair of the Technical Advisory Group that orchestrates the U.S. voice in developing industry standards through the International Standards Organization (ISO).
Tinnish holds a B.S. in Communication Studies from Northwestern University, an M.B.A from University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Organization Development from Benedictine University. She joined Kendall’s School of Hospitality Management in 2008 and teaches courses in sustainable tourism, meetings and events, organizational behavior, human resources management, and meeting management.
